Getting my weight under control has come from a process of treating myself as well as I treat others in every way.
No, you did not misread that title… Diets don’t work! It may shock you to hear this from me, especially as I’ve been catering “healthy diets” across Bahrain for the past 8 years. Having coached countless people on achieving their health and weight goals, I think it’s safe to say that I’ve learned a few things about “Diets” along the way. Read on to find out more;
Every time we turn on the TV, flip through a magazine, drive down the road or go to a party we are bombarded with the most persistent obsession: WEIGHT. Diets are a big industry; businesses spend bucket loads of money to try and lure you to try their latest diet or weight-loss products (low calorie, paleo, low carb, high protein, low fat, no fat, raw, vegan, gluten-free… you name it) with promises that THIS will (finally!) be the solution—your “quick fix” to a thinner sexier body. Sound too good to be true…well you’re right it probably (and sadly) is not. Unfortunately, the same advertising efforts also deeply affect our children, who develop distorted body images and are often on diets as early as nine or 10 years of age.
Countless diet pills, weight-loss books, packaged “health” foods and fad diets promise to help us achieve our desired weight, but for many, these magic wand solutions seem to have backfired. Our population has reached its highest weight in history. With more people going on diets than ever before, how can this be the case? The simple answer is that most diets often lead us away from our common sense making deep dents in our wallets while achieving very few, if any, lasting results. Why?
Why Diets Don’t Work:
• One man’s superfood is another man’s poison (and vice versa). We are each unique, with different needs based on our gender, age, ancestry, lifestyle and purpose; how could one diet be right for everyone?
• What goes up must come down. Extreme solutions don’t work! As we learnt in physics class, if a pendulum swings to one extreme, it must also swing back equally to the other. Even though a diet may work for a short amount of time, research shows that almost all diets result in a 5 kilo weight gain once off the diet.
• Punishing yourself sucks! Diets are too restrictive and are often used (subconsciously) as a way of either controlling or punishing ourselves and sometimes they end up being yet another thing to “fail” at when we’re unhappy in life. Diets by nature are unsustainable by a healthy human body because they often work against it instead of with it.
• Most people are disconnected from why they gain weight. When we see diet as the only reason why we’re overweight or unhealthy we are completely missing the boat. Did you know that ignored or unexpressed emotions are often the first thing to cause weight imbalances? What are you still literally “holding on” to? Once we begin to let go of our toxic emotions (often stored in fat cells) the weight often just sheds off naturally!
Clients often come to me wanting a “diet plan” that will fix all heir problems, having lost sight of the many aspects of life that truly nourish and balance our bodies. No diet plan regardless of how nutritious it may be can replace fundamental human needs such as slowing down, finding what brings us joy in life and spending quality time with loving people. Then, making conscious food choices, eating mindfully and making simple lifestyle changes will create positive results and release you from the endless cycle of dieting.
Given half a chance, your amazing body has the capacity to self-regulate and balance out by itself, but this is only possible by getting out of the diet mentality and listening to what you truly need. Imagine reclaiming all of the energy you waste on diets and on negative self-image and hurtful self-talk and using it constructively, so that you can listen to and work with your body instead of against it. This is why the diet programs I offer today are an amazing way to effectively jump start your health and purify your system rather than a long term diet solution as I used to offer several years ago. The truth is that there is no such thing as a magic pill; you already have everything you need within you. With kindness towards yourself and loving reflection on what your body needs, you can learn to feed yourself in a nourishing way.
