Temple Cleaning Time

Have you heard the saying “You have to get rid of the old to make way for the new.”?  Well, with Spring upon us, there’s no better time to put this mantra into action!  If you’re one of those people who likes to hold onto “stuff”, then this is time to set yourself free.  This might be a scary and unimaginable thought for some, especially if you’re really attached to your possessions, but by holding onto the past, you’re not leaving any space for the new opportunities in your life to come in.

Many of us hold onto both physical as well as mental and emotional clutter for year after year and we just keep adding onto the load. Some things may hold precious memories, remind us of our family members, or even our own childhood and youth. We also could be holding on to resentment, anger or sadness from past traumas, which are subconsciously tainting our ability to enjoy our life to the fullest today. The bottom line is, if you are feeling stuck in your life, it might be time for some serious spring-cleaning on all levels. Give away some of that old stuff you haven’t touched in years or donate it to charity, forgive those who have hurt you and yourself for any mistakes committed, say goodbye to the heavy “old” load you’ve been carrying and welcome in the lighter energy of your “new” life filled with joy, possibility and freedom. Try these three ideas to help you get started on cleansing all your temples; the home you live in, your physical body and your toxic emotions:

1. For our homes, clutter and unused “stuff” equals stagnant energy that blocks your abundance. Give away outgrown clothes, books, rusty bicycles, tools and random keepsakes, to allow the energy to flow better in your life. You may even make a big difference in someone’s life who could make good use of something that was simply collecting dust in your home. Rule of thumb: if you haven’t used or worn something in over a year, you probably never will.

2. To spring clean your body, we need to flush out old food residues and toxins that need to be cleansed. Cleansing or Fasting for a short period of time is a great way to do this. Cleansing means paring down your food to just simple fruit and vegetables, lots of water and perhaps even cutting down on grains (especially gluten) and sugar for a while. Fasting means limiting our intake of food for a certain period of time and then drinking lots of water, fresh vegetable and fruit juices, teas and soups. Without much energy going toward digestion, more energy is available to the rest of your body and mind. Both cleansing and fasting can give you clearer concentration, help you gain spiritual awareness and higher states of consciousness. It can also improve your immune function and promote better digestion.

3. While you’re cleaning out your body and home, don’t forget to spring-clean your heart and mind. Let go of negative thoughts, feelings, patterns and habits that you’ve been holding onto that are no longer serving you. A clean, open heart and an uncluttered mind will make space for you to receive all the good that awaits you in your life. You can do this by starting to meditate regularly, bless and forgive yourself and others for any past transgressions, and take regular salt baths (1 kg salt in a bath tub of water) to cleanse your emotional body. Try it out on a stressful day, it really works!
